The "Wooden Nickel" story....Branding at its best. My uncle Phil was a car salesman. He worked at a large volume dealership in the Northeast. He was a good salesman, but with 50 other salesmen on staff he felt that he was missing contacts and leads when he wasn't there. Bottom line is he felt he was losing money. Phil decided he wanted to create a way for people to remember him, ask for him, and ultimately buy from him. The question was how could he do it simply and easily? What Phil decided was he was going to utilize at the end of all his conversations was the phrase, "Don't take a wooden nickels from anybody but me." At which point he would hand them a wooden nickel that had all his contact information. The wooden nickel became his business card. Even after he sold a car to a client and often times many cars, he still would have people stopping by the dealership to obtain a new wooden nickel to replace one that was misplaced or lost. When people returned to the dealership, they invariably asked to speak to the guy who handed out wooden nickels. Because of this simple branding techniques, within a years time he was the number one salesman at the dealership. Well what does this little story mean for you? Simple, find a way, a simple product or handout to your customers that will keep them asking for you. Its a great way for you to differeiate yourself your competition.
